Hi Buddy I have been trying to post a reply to your "Random Thoughts on the Network Age" but every time I try I get an error saying "security token was missing or mismatched" I suspect not may people would properly understand the thread so here is my post, I hope you find it intresting?
I could not agree with you more Essidus and I totally see where you are coming from, the power of the network and I have to say technology itself is an amazing and mind bending thing.
My father first started working in I.T. in the 1960’s, he first started working with the IBM 360
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_360
As you can see a very basic machine compared to today’s technology, to put it into perspective I currently have 3TB in a NAS box that is plugged into my 300mbps wireless router, the NAS has an onboard torrent client, supports media streaming, FTP etc. I can access it and all the storage from anywhere in my home via any wireless enabled device or anywhere in the world I can access the internet. This set up cost under £400. Not much money when you consider the vast amount of space and flexibility it offers
My Mrs recently got a new smart phone, it has GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, HSDPA, a 624 MHz processor, VGA screen, 3mega pixel camera etc, it cost £200 on pay as you bash. So again a hugely flexible bit of kit for relatively very little money.
I am currently sending this post via my laptop, it has dual cores, 4GB ram 1TB of storage, plays the latest games no problems and even has a sub woofer in it! The connection I used to send this is via a 3G HSDPA dongle, I have connected to the net from a moving train and in a car on the motorway, so true wireless internet access. All this kit cost me under £850. So again very little money for what it does.
Don’t get me wrong I am not trying to show off about the kit I have I am simply illustrating the advances in technology in just 45 years and how cheap it has become
"They're also working on a way to charge batteries without the device ever being plugged in. That means that in potentially less than ten years, we will have true 100% cord independence"
I suspect you don’t realise how close we are to this, please see:

Just imagine once they get the range and power output properly sorted what you can do with this technology. You could embed one of these devices in the wall of your home and no more plug sockets. One step further imagine a network of these devices covering your country. Batteries will become a thing of the past and electric cars become a viable option.
I know what you are thinking at this point, “but we will still be dependent on dirty fuels to generate the electricity in the first place”.
Hopefully not so, forget hydrogen fuel cells, solar, wind power etc, in fairness they can never create the vast amounts of energy we need. So what’s the answer? Well we are not far off creating star power on earth via Nuclear Fusion

As for Google and others are working to build a nationwide wireless network, we already have it, it’s called HSDPA:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Sp..._Packet_Access
bit to slow for you how about 4g:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G
“bodies are working for commercial deployment of 4G networks roughly in the 2012-2015 time scale”
“A nominal data rate of 100 Mbit/s while the client physically moves at high speeds relative to the station, and 1 Gbit/s while client and station are in relatively fixed positions”
And to think only 45 years ago the IBM 360 was cutting edge technology, am I filled with wonder? you bet I am, as for fear? not in any way I look forwards to embracing these new technologies.
But all these advances just shows how truly fu*king stupid and retarded the media companies are for fighting to hold on to outdated business models and sh*tty outdated technology.
Isn’t technology an amazing thing?
